Self
portrait and Still Life
Graphite on paper. 7 x 3 in.
Created
February 1998
This
drawing focuses on altered perception. Most of my paintings
and drawings are based on the same theme. In this one I tried
to make the image of me look more like Lewis Carol's character
Alice. This drawing suggests the images in the reflection are
the distorted and melted images of another world. It's a place
where I can see but cannot truely visit; unlike Alice who did
so in the story
Though the Looking Glass.
The still life portion of the drawing has items that are important
to me. Like my records, a Hawiian coffee mug and a box that
my great gandfather made, a plastic monkey puppet face and the
rabbit mask that Tom wore on Halloween. There's even a couple
of self portrait paintings that I was working on at the time.
The spoon in the glass is a reference to my mother who recently
died in February of 2002.
